Barbie Butt Surgery: The Most Painful Experience

This topic is about the experiences and challenges faced by individuals who have undergone abdominoperineal resection (APR) surgery, often referred to as "Barbie-butt" surgery. This procedure involves the removal of the anus and rectum, and it can be quite painful and difficult to heal from. Here are some insights and advice shared by those who have been through it:

- Healing times can vary greatly. Some people needed months or even years for their wounds to fully close. Daily care, such as packing or dressing the wound, along with patience, is crucial. Radiation damage can make healing take even longer. Sitz baths, taken three times a day, were recommended by a surgeon and helped resolve chronic fistulas for one person.

- Pain management and surgical techniques can make a big difference. While some experienced severe pain, others had little to no discomfort, especially when surgeons avoided extensive stitching of the buttocks. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy was beneficial for healing, although the ear tubes required for the therapy were painful for one individual.

- Coping strategies include staying busy with positive activities, laughter, and maintaining supportive social connections. Many emphasized the importance of a warrior mentality and celebrating survival. Practices like prayer, deep breathing, and relaxation helped some manage pain and fear.

- Experiences with nasogastric (NG) tubes varied. Many found them more distressing than the surgery itself, especially when inserted due to blockages. However, some found relief from nausea once the tube was correctly placed. Tips for easing future insertions include relaxation, deep breathing, distraction, and focusing on the relief the tube provides.

- For those anxious about future surgeries, veterans of the procedure reassured them that despite the pain, life and confidence, including in clothing choices, can improve afterward.

- General encouragement was shared, reminding everyone that their scars are "badges of honor." Patience, stamina, and shared stories help the community support each other through these challenges.
