Millimeter Wave Airport Scanners

Traveling through airports with an ostomy can sometimes be a bit challenging, especially when it comes to security screenings. The newer whole-body millimeter-wave scanners often highlight stoma pouches, leading to additional checks. Here are some helpful tips and insights to make the experience smoother:

1. Understand the Security Perspective:
- Security officers are required to check anything that might conceal prohibited items. An ostomy pouch is large enough to potentially hide contraband, so extra screening is part of their protocol.
- Remember that the officers are doing their job to ensure everyone's safety.

2. Minimize Embarrassment During Screening:
- Inform the officer about your ostomy before the scan or right after the alarm goes off. You might say, "It's my ostomy bag; do you want me to rub it so you can swab my hands?" This can often speed up the process.
- You can request a private room and/or a same-gender officer for the pat-down. Both TSA and UK security are required to accommodate such requests.
- Keep in mind that other travelers are usually focused on their own journeys, and you are unlikely to see them again.

3. Use Documentation or Identifiers:
- In UK airports, security agents are trained to be "stoma aware," and you can ask for a private check.
- Wearing a Hidden Disabilities "Sunflower" lanyard can indicate that you may need extra discretion. Some people find this helpful, while others prefer to communicate directly.
- Consider carrying a flash card or a doctor's letter explaining your appliance, and show it only when necessary.

4. Personal Coping Strategies:
- The first experience might be the most embarrassing, but it tends to become routine with time.
- Stay calm, cooperate with the process, and focus on enjoying your trip once you're through security.

These tips can help make the airport security process a bit more manageable and less stressful. Safe travels!
