Preventing Leaks with a Simple Baggie Trick

This topic is about a clever method to prevent leaks from the tail-end of an ostomy pouch. The idea is to use a simple plastic baggie over the clipped tail of the pouch to catch any leaks that might occur, even when the clip seems secure. This method has been used successfully for many years, especially in an office setting, without any uncontained leaks. Here are some additional tips and insights shared by others:

1. IGGIE Clip: Some people suggest using the IGGIE Clip as a more secure option than standard plastic clips. For added security, one person even glues a small magnet to the clip and folds the pouch tail several times before clipping.

2. Toilet-paper insert trick: Nurses and users recommend folding a square of toilet paper into a rectangle and placing it inside the cleaned outlet before closing it. This absorbs any leftover liquid and can be flushed away during the next emptying, helping to prevent drips or stains.

3. Decorative or double-containment covers: Some individuals use cloth pouch covers, which provide a similar double barrier effect as the baggie method.

4. Velcro-closure pouches: Many users have found that modern Velcro systems, like those from Hollister and Coloplast, have replaced older plastic clips and significantly reduce leaks when the outlet is wiped clean each time.

5. Brand experiences:
- Hollister: Long-time users report very few issues, though one person noticed a small tear near the Velcro, possibly due to a manufacturing defect, and another mentioned a decline in plastic quality.
- Coloplast: A user with five years of experience using Velcro closures reports no tail-end leaks when wiping the outlet before fastening.

6. Additional containment ideas: Wrapping a small piece of toilet paper around the outside of the tail before folding it under can also help catch any seepage.

7. Community questions: Some members were curious about the specific brands of baggies and clips used and whether the "clip" referred to ordinary office binder clips.
