Advice Needed for Colostomy Bag Management Before Reversal Surgery

This topic is about managing a high-placed colostomy bag during bowel preparation before reversal surgery. The person is concerned about how to handle the increased output from the prep, given that their colostomy bag sits high on the abdomen and doesn't easily allow for direct emptying into the toilet. Here are some helpful suggestions and insights shared by others:

1. Consider using a colostomy irrigation sleeve. This is a very long, drainable sleeve that hangs well below the stoma and can reach the toilet bowl, making it easier to manage the output during prep.

2. Until you can get longer sleeves, you might try emptying the pouch into a large plastic cup or a similar container. Afterward, you can pour the contents into the toilet and rinse the cup. It's a good idea to discard the cup once the prep is finished.

3. Some people find that kneeling in front of the toilet helps. This position can bring the pouch closer to the bowl and reduce splashing. However, its effectiveness can depend on your height and the height of the toilet. If the pouch outlet is still level with or above the rim, it might not drain well.

4. Long irrigation sleeves can be ordered online or through regular ostomy-supply distributors. Many have found them useful after watching demonstrations on YouTube.

These tips aim to make the process a bit easier and less messy during this important preparation time.
