A Little Help From My Ostomate Family?

This topic is about dealing with issues related to the Coloplast Sensura Mio ostomy system, specifically when the pouch detaches or the wafer doesn't adhere properly, often after eating or experiencing bloating. Here are some helpful insights and advice shared by others who have faced similar challenges:

1. **Pouch Detachment:**
- Ensure you hear and feel the audible click of both the snap ring and the security lock when attaching the pouch.
- After locking, gently tug on the pouch to confirm it's secure. If it comes off, you've avoided a potential mishap.
- The newer notched Mio coupling may have a softer click, so double-check to ensure it's properly attached.

2. **Techniques for Reliable Coupling:**
- Attach the pouch to the wafer on a flat surface before applying it over the stoma.
- If you need a clear view of the stoma, finish by running a finger around the ring and giving a test tug.
- Start attaching at the bottom of the ring and work your way up, similar to fitting a bicycle tire.

3. **Lubricating the Coupling:**
- Lightly wipe the plastic rings with vegetable or baby oil to make attachment easier and more secure.
- The oil acts as a lubricant during attachment and won't cause the ring to slip off once it's locked.

4. **Preventing Wafer Adhesion Failure:**
- Ensure your skin is completely clean, cool, and dry before applying the wafer. Moisture can prevent proper adhesion.
- Take extra time to dry your skin after showering, using a hairdryer on a cool setting if necessary.
- Consider using Brava "C" Elastic Barrier Strips or a Coloplast belt for added security when your abdomen changes shape.

5. **Dealing with Post-Meal Bloating:**
- Some people with ileostomies experience bloating, which can be linked to certain foods, drinks, or large meals.
- An upcoming medical test may help determine if the bloating is related to diet, gas build-up, or muscle function.

6. **Odour and Gas Management:**
- A lack of odour is common with a high-output, fast-transit ileostomy. Deodorant drops like Hollister M9 can help eliminate any residual smell.
- To release gas, rotate the pouch upward, open the Velcro tail, and let the gas escape while keeping the output away from the coupling.
- The notches on the new Mio make burping easier but may allow residue onto the coupling, so wipe thoroughly afterward.

7. **Product Suggestions:**
- Larger-capacity Sensura Mio pouches are available and may be helpful after a big meal.
- If wafer adhesion issues persist, consider exploring custom baseplates secured with prosthetic glue as a potential solution.
