Ileostomy and APR Surgery

This topic is about recovering from an abdominoperineal resection (APR) and dealing with perineal numbness after having an ileostomy. The person who started the discussion is a man who had these two significant surgeries within a span of seven months and is looking for advice from others who have gone through similar experiences.

Here are some helpful insights and advice shared by others:

1. Experiencing numbness in the perineal area after APR is quite common. One person mentioned that they could only feel pressure, not touch, on the flap site for up to two years. While sensation did gradually return, it never fully matched the sensation on the unaffected side.

2. Over time, the feeling of tightness tends to decrease, and your range of movement can return to normal. It's important to stay active but avoid overexerting yourself.

3. The typical healing timeline includes:
- 4 to 6 months for the surgical wound to close and for initial recovery.
- An additional 6 months for scars to flatten and fade.

4. Sitting for extended periods might cause discomfort due to pressure on the sciatic nerve. Taking breaks and changing positions can help alleviate this discomfort.

5. Three months after APR, another person still experienced varying levels of pain while sitting and noted that scar improvement can be slow. Patience is key during this recovery process.
