Questions About Layering Rings with Flange

This topic is about managing leaks for those with a flush or slightly retracted stoma. The person sharing their experience has tried various products and methods but still faces challenges with leakage. They are looking for advice on how to better manage their situation without resorting to further surgery. Here are some helpful tips and insights shared by others:

1. Layering Barrier Rings:
- You can cut pieces from a barrier ring and layer them to add thickness where needed, creating a custom fit.
- Cut through one side of the ring, wrap it around the base of the stoma, and press it flat to prevent it from sliding over the stoma.

2. Use Minimal Products:
- Using too much paste or too many accessories can create gaps and weaken the seal. Many find better results with just a well-placed barrier ring and wafer.

3. Convex vs. Flat Systems:
- A flush or inward stoma might benefit from a convex system, but some find fewer leaks with a flat wafer and a thick ring that fills in the dip around the stoma. It's worth trying both styles.

4. Cutting and Warming Tips:
- Warm rings and wafers by hand before applying them. A hair dryer can be used but is optional.
- After applying the warmed wafer, press it firmly around the stoma for several minutes to ensure a good fit.

5. Belt and Pouch Management:
- A snug ostomy belt can help keep the wafer pressed evenly against the abdomen.
- Leave a small pocket of air in the pouch to allow output to fall straight down, reducing the risk of leaks.

6. Check Stoma Height:
- Ideally, a stoma should protrude about ¾ inch (approximately 19 mm). If it doesn't, consult with your surgeon or ostomy nurse, although surgery is not preferred by the person sharing their experience.

7. Alternative Adhesives:
- Torbot Bonding Cement is mentioned as a strong adhesive option. Someone experienced with it might provide more detailed guidance.

8. Brands and Products:
- The person uses Convatec and Coloplast two-piece systems, Hollister barrier rings, Sure Seal rings, and is considering Torbot Bonding Cement.

These insights aim to help manage leaks more effectively and improve the overall experience for those with a flush or slightly retracted stoma.
