DIY Ostomy Belt/Wrap - Need Help!

This topic is all about finding creative and affordable ways to make or source ostomy belts or wraps that fit better and stay in place. The original poster is having trouble with the hospital-issued belt, which keeps slipping due to her small frame and the low position of her stoma. She is looking for do-it-yourself ideas or low-cost alternatives that are comfortable and effective.

Here are some ideas and tips shared by others:

1. A trial solution involved using a little girl’s training bra, removing the straps, and using it as a slim wrap or mini hernia belt. However, something a bit wider is needed for better coverage.

2. DIY wraps, belts, and covers:
- Cut an elasticated support bandage or the leg of very tight tights; sew the edges if desired.
- Slice the bottom off an old T-shirt and add Velcro for adjustability.
- Use a medical elastic bandage, add Velcro, and burn the opening edge to stop fraying if a stoma hole is needed.
- Modify existing hernia belts by sewing darts or folding and stitching excess length.
- Make a pouch-support "sling" using the elastic waistband from worn briefs and sew a pocket to hold the pouch’s tail.
- Place the pouch inside a cut-off child’s or teen’s bra or a stretchy tank top for a snug hold.

3. Off-the-shelf garments repurposed for ostomy use:
- Pregnancy "Belly Bands" work like tube tops and come in various colors to hide the pouch without restricting output.
- High-waisted, tummy-slimming underwear provides gentle compression and allows wearing dresses, skirts, or skinny jeans.
- A stretchy torso garment from Compression Dynamics can be cut to length without fraying and may double as a hernia or support wrap.

4. Commercial ostomy-specific products:
- Ostomy Secrets offers wraps and underwear.
- Weir-Comfees provides boy-pant style options.
- CUI International offers custom elastic hernia belts with Velcro adjustment.
- OstoGroup distributes donated belts and other ostomy supplies, with customers only paying shipping.

5. Sizing and fit tips:
- Belly Band sizing is by pregnancy trimester; men with certain waist sizes may need to experiment with sizes.
- When elastic belts stretch over time, fold and stitch a flap to shorten them instead of discarding.
