Emotional Rollercoaster after Ileostomy - Need Support

This topic is about managing the emotional ups and downs after getting a new ileostomy. The person who started the discussion had an ileostomy surgery on January 26, 2012, after dealing with ulcerative colitis for many years. They received limited training in the hospital and a few home-care visits. With the nearest nurse and surgeon quite far away, they feel under-informed and experience rapid mood swings, from relief to fear and frustration. Finding this forum has been reassuring, knowing others are on the same journey, and they are grateful for strong family support.

Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. Emotional swings are normal. Many new ostomates experience a range of emotions, including joy, relief, anxiety, depression, and eventually acceptance, especially during the first year.

2. Quality of life often improves significantly compared to living with severe ulcerative colitis. Many people find a renewed sense of freedom once they get used to managing their appliance.

3. Use the forum whenever fears arise. Experienced ostomates can offer real-world solutions and moral support around the clock.

4. Follow the instructions from your stoma nurse closely. Each mistake is a learning opportunity, and confidence grows with practice.

5. Re-engaging in familiar activities, like working on a Mustang or taking walks, can help speed up both physical and emotional recovery.
