Seeking Advice on Ileostomy Products for Sensitive Skin

This topic is about finding the right ileostomy wafer and bag systems for someone with very sensitive skin, especially after having an ileostomy due to Crohn’s disease. The person is looking for suggestions on products that won't irritate their skin. Here are some helpful tips and insights shared by others:

1. Experiment with different brands to find one that suits your skin. You can request free samples and advice from companies like Coloplast, ConvaTec, Hollister, and Dansac.

2. Consider the Dansac "Nova" two-piece system:
- It has a 6 mm convex base-plate that can stay secure for up to 96 hours, with bags worn for 48 hours.
- It helped someone who experienced base-plate edge lifting near the navel.
- Avoid using barrier films or wipes like Cavilon if they worsen rashes.

3. Use an Eakin Cohesive seal under the wafer to extend wear time. Some people have managed to change their wafer only once a week with this method.

4. If you suspect an adhesive allergy:
- Place a Coloplast 4" × 4" skin barrier sheet (Coloplast item #3210) between your skin and the regular wafer, such as a ConvaTec wafer.
- This can prevent irritation even if the wafer slightly touches bare skin.

5. Barrier films and wipes might cause irritation themselves, so consider not using them if you continue to have rashes.

6. Keep the base-plate on for as long as it is safe, possibly several days, to allow your skin to recover between changes. Use alcohol wipes only when removing the base-plate.
