Advice for Traveling with an Ostomy and Choosing a City Break

Planning a trip after recovering from ostomy surgery can be both exciting and a bit nerve-wracking. If you're considering a short holiday, like a weekend in New York, here are some helpful insights and tips for traveling by air with an ostomy and choosing a great first city-break destination.

1. Flying with an Ostomy:
- Many travelers with ostomies report no issues with pouch "ballooning" due to cabin pressure. Flying feels much the same as it did before surgery.

2. Packing and Supplies:
- Always keep enough ostomy supplies and medications in your carry-on luggage in case your checked bags are lost. Some travelers bring all their supplies for trips lasting several weeks, but at the very least, pack enough for a few days.
- Consider an in-flight kit with essentials like adhesive spray, a magnifying mirror, wipes, disposal bags, and spare pouches. A large pencil case or small toiletry bag works well for this.

3. Security Screening:
- Most people pass through security without any questions, though sometimes a pat-down may occur. Emptying your pouch before security can help reduce attention.
- Carry a brief doctor's letter explaining your ostomy and requesting any searches be done privately, which can make the process smoother.

4. Seating and Toilets:
- Choose an aisle seat for easier access to the washroom, especially if you have a high-output stoma. While aircraft lavatories are small, they are manageable. It's a good idea to empty your pouch before boarding and use the cabin washroom as needed.

5. Food and Drink:
- To limit gas, avoid carbonated drinks and, for some, tea or coffee. Light snacks like bananas are recommended. Some travelers eat apples, but others suggest avoiding apples, mushrooms, pineapple, sweet corn, or other foods that might cause blockages for 48 hours before long trips.
- If advised by your clinician, consider taking Imodium (loperamide) for extra security.

6. Managing Anxiety:
- Feeling anxious is common, but many find their first flight goes smoothly and without issues.

7. Destination Ideas:
- New York City in December offers festive activities like the Nutcracker at Lincoln Center and the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City. Be prepared for higher prices, but package deals are available through StarrTours.
- Ottawa is great for trails and nearby Gatineau Park, with Algonquin Park being a lovely option in warmer months.
- Florida beaches are perfect for some winter sun.

These tips should help make your travel experience as smooth and enjoyable as possible. Enjoy your trip!
