Unusual Sensation in Anal Area - Any Similar Experiences?

This topic is about experiencing phantom sensations in the area where the anus used to be after colorectal surgery. The person who shared their experience had surgery three years ago and is now noticing some unusual, but not painful, sensations. They are curious if others have felt the same way.

Here are some helpful insights and advice from others who have been through similar experiences:

1. Phantom sensations are quite common after the removal of the rectum or anus. These feelings are similar to phantom limb sensations, where you might feel an urge to pass gas or a sensation that something might "fall out."

2. Many people with ileostomies or total colectomies have reported experiencing these brief, strange, and harmless sensations.

3. A doctor mentioned that these feelings could be due to pelvic muscles adjusting and shifting over time. Usually, no treatment is needed for these sensations.
