Bladder pain after J-Pouch surgery - seeking advice

This topic is about someone who recently had a J-pouch surgery after an emergency colectomy due to ulcerative colitis. While their recovery has been mostly smooth, they are experiencing severe bladder pain during urination. They are seeking advice and wondering if others have had similar experiences. Here are some insights and advice shared by others:

1. **Rule out infection first**
- It's important to get a proper urine culture before continuing antibiotics. Taking antibiotics without confirming an infection might not help if there is no infection present.

2. **Post-surgical bladder irritation is common and usually temporary**
- Many people have reported experiencing a similar "pulling" pain after surgery, which typically resolves within 1-2 months. This pain is often not caused by a UTI. It's normal to worry about possible surgical damage, but usually, the discomfort eases as healing progresses.

3. **Symptomatic relief**
- Phenazopyridine, known by the brand name Pyridium, can help relieve bladder burning and pressure. Be aware that it can cause your urine to turn bright orange while taking it.

4. **Bladder control issues can accompany pelvic surgery**
- Some individuals, particularly men, may experience bladder control issues after rectal removal. One person mentioned needing diapers initially, but their surgeon expected bladder function to recover within about two months. Sitting might cause pelvic pressure that feels like "a tennis ball."

5. **Consider other pelvic/bladder pain syndromes**
- Conditions like Interstitial Cystitis (IC) can mimic UTI symptoms. Nerve irritation from bowel surgery might also worsen bladder pain. Consulting a urologist or pain-management specialist for evaluation and possible nerve blocks could be beneficial.

6. **Long-term outlook encouragement**
- Someone who underwent a similar surgery shared that despite a challenging recovery, the surgery was ultimately beneficial in the long run.
