Travel Insurance Challenges with Crohn's and Ileostomy

This topic is about the challenges of obtaining travel insurance for someone with Crohn’s disease, an ileostomy, and recent symptoms of a bowel obstruction. The person is planning to travel to Malaysia soon but is facing difficulties in securing insurance due to their medical condition. They are also dealing with a potential bowel blockage, which adds to their stress. Here are some pieces of advice and insights shared by others:

1. Having an ileostomy should not automatically disqualify you from getting travel insurance. It's important to keep looking and avoid insurers that are only available through travel agents.

2. For those in Australia, consider contacting RACV Travel Insurance directly. Some have had success getting coverage with an ileostomy, especially when booking through places like Flight Centre.

3. In Canada, The Co-Operators is a company that has been known to cover people with ostomies. They require a medical questionnaire, and premiums might be higher if you have current symptoms. It might be worth checking if they operate in Victoria, Australia.

4. From the UK, Freedom Insurance, which underwrites through AXA, is recommended. They offer both single-trip and annual policies at reasonable prices and have online options for other countries.

5. Be prepared to fill out detailed medical questionnaires. If you have active symptoms, expect that premiums might be higher or there could be specific exclusions.

6. Many have successfully obtained coverage with an ileostomy. Persistence and reaching out to multiple providers directly can improve your chances.
