Alternative lubricants for drainable pouches?

This topic is about finding affordable alternatives to lubricate Eakin Pelican one-piece drainable colostomy pouches. The goal is to prevent stool from sticking, a problem known as "pancaking," without causing damage to the pouch. Here are some helpful suggestions and insights:

1. Consider switching to a two-piece appliance. This allows you to replace a worn bag without disturbing the wafer. If detachment is a concern, ensure the pouch is snapped on firmly and consider using a support belt that clips to the pouch, not the wafer.

2. Use Hollister M9 Odour Drops as both a deodorant and a lubricant. Some users find they need to add more drops than recommended for effective lubrication.

3. Be cautious with baby oil, as it can weaken the plastic of the pouch. It's advisable to stop using it based on feedback from other users.

4. To make Hollister Adapt Lubricating Deodorant more cost-effective, try mixing it with water before adding it to the pouch. This method has been found to be economical and still effective.

5. Consider colostomy irrigation. When done correctly, it can eliminate stool output for 24–36 hours, reducing the need for in-pouch lubricants and preventing pancaking during that time.

6. While pancaking is primarily a colostomy issue, it can also occur with an ileostomy depending on diet.
