Shower Dilemma - Keeping Bag Dry?

Showering with a urostomy bag can be a bit tricky, especially if you're trying to keep the appliance dry or manage moisture. Here's some advice and insights from others who have been in the same situation:

1. Consider using a 2-piece system. This allows you to detach the pouch while keeping the barrier or baseplate in place during your shower. Afterward, you can simply pat the edge of the barrier dry and attach a fresh pouch. Some recommended brands include Hollister 2-piece and Coloplast Sensura 2-piece.

2. Try making a homemade shower shield. You can create a small "shower curtain" from plastic sheeting attached to an elastic belt to cover the appliance. While it might not keep everything completely dry, it can help the flange last longer, with some people reporting 7-10 days of use.

3. For drying after a shower, you have a few options:
- Pat the pouch or barrier dry with paper towels or toilet paper, then let it air-dry.
- Use a hair-dryer on a cool or low-warm setting. If there's no power outlet in the bathroom, consider using a heavy-duty extension cord from another room.

4. If you have a colostomy and keep the same barrier for weeks, you might want to change only the pouch every 1-2 days, as the integrated filter can lose effectiveness over time.

5. Before showering, you can lightly coat the front of the barrier or base with petroleum jelly (like Vaseline). This can make cleanup easier, provide slight waterproofing, and help the pouch slide on smoothly. It's suggested to change bases twice a week and wash reusable pouches with antibacterial soap, hanging them in the shower to dry.
