Diet Changes and Increased Gas: What's the Connection?

This topic is about someone who has been living with an ileostomy for over ten years and recently made some changes to their diet in an effort to lose weight. They stopped eating snacks like yogurt, chips, crackers, and cookies, and switched from white bread to wheat bread. However, these changes have led to frequent and embarrassing gas at work, which they hadn't experienced before. They are curious if any of the foods they stopped eating were actually helping to prevent gas and are looking for advice on what might be causing this new issue.

Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. Wheat bread and other grain products are known to cause gas for many people. It might be worth removing wheat bread or even all bread and grains from your diet to see if this helps reduce the gas.

2. Yogurt is often beneficial for people with ostomies as it can help control gas and stool odor due to its natural probiotics. Reintroducing regular yogurt into your diet a few times a week might be helpful.

3. Be careful with yogurts that are labeled "no-sugar" or contain artificial sweeteners. Some people find that these can cause stomach pain and indigestion.

4. If yogurt doesn't work for you, consider trying a probiotic supplement. This can be an alternative way to support your gut bacteria and potentially reduce gas.
