Living with an Ostomy Bag and Embracing Life

This topic is about coming to terms with living life with a permanent ostomy bag after a life-threatening bowel rupture. The journey from shock to acceptance is a significant one, and here are some insights and advice shared by someone who has been through it:

1. After the initial shock and anger, acceptance can come with time. It took about three months of physical recovery and another year to rebuild strength.

2. Although a reversal was an option, the risks and long recovery time led to the decision to keep the stoma permanently. This choice resulted in a much-improved quality of life, free from the pain and limitations experienced before surgery.

3. Everyday activities like swimming, wearing a bathing suit, and going out have become normal again. Occasional leaks or "explosions" are minor inconveniences compared to the previous suffering.

4. Maintaining a positive mental attitude is crucial. It's important to view waste elimination as a natural bodily function, regardless of how it happens.

5. The support of friends and family plays a critical role in recovery. Their presence and encouragement can make a big difference.

6. The pouch becomes a part of life that is rarely thought about, except when it needs changing.

7. Keeping perspective is key. Remembering that the alternative to surgery was much worse can help maintain a positive outlook. Life quality is largely what we make of it.

8. Acceptance is important. Surgeons often warn that reversals may not be successful, and many find that embracing the "Baggies Forever" mindset is realistic and livable once healing is complete.
