Colostomy & Hernia Surgery - Recovery Time & Worth It?

The topic at hand is about the experiences of individuals with a colostomy or other types of ostomies who have undergone surgery to repair a parastomal hernia. The discussion revolves around the recovery time and whether the surgery was considered worthwhile by those who have had it.

Here are some shared experiences and advice:

1. Surgical Experience and Recovery:
- One person with an ileostomy had two separate surgeries for parastomal hernia repair. The first surgery involved an 11-day hospital stay due to complications, while the second required a 4-day stay. Each recovery took about 6 weeks. A mesh insert used in the second surgery has successfully prevented further hernias.
- Another individual who had mesh repair found the recovery challenging but ultimately felt it was "well worth it."
- Someone else is preparing for surgery after living with a hernia since 2011, which has grown large enough to necessitate wearing two abdominal binders.

2. Recurrence and Risk:
- One person did not experience a hernia for 26 years but then developed two in the same year.
- Many surgeons reportedly say that for ostomates, it's not a matter of if but when a hernia will occur, indicating a high lifetime risk.
- Weak core muscles or intense physical therapy can trigger or worsen a hernia.

3. Lifting Precautions:
- Hernias often result from heavy or repetitive lifting or poor lifting techniques. It's advised to use a helper when lifting.
- After hernia repair, one member was advised to adhere to a strict 10-pound weight limit to prevent new hernias at the revised stoma site.

4. Support Garments and Belts:
- Nu-Hope hernia support belts are popular:
- A 4-inch-wide belt is worn during the day for activities.
- A 1-inch belt is used while sleeping for comfort.
- Wearing a hernia belt or abdominal binder during lifting or strenuous activities is recommended, with some wearing it full-time except when sleeping.
- One person wears two abdominal binders to manage a large hernia until surgery.

5. General Sentiments:
- Those who have undergone mesh repair generally find the surgery worth the recovery time.
- The use of support garments and adherence to strict lifting limits are emphasized for both prevention and post-surgical protection.
