Wound Care Concerns After Ileostomy Reversal

This topic is about someone who is experiencing concerns after having a double ileostomy reversal surgery. Twelve days after the procedure, they noticed that their surgical wound, initially closed with staples, has started to widen and bleed after some staples were removed. They are worried about whether this is normal and what steps they should take, especially since it's a holiday period and their regular doctor's office is closed.

Here are some helpful pieces of advice and insights:

1. Try to get an assessment from the original surgeon or a Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurse (WOCN). These professionals have specialized knowledge about ostomy-related incisions that might not be available from general emergency staff.

2. Consider using Medihoney, an over-the-counter honey-based wound dressing, which can help promote faster healing. Many nurses recommend it, even if some doctors might not be familiar with it.

3. When changing dressings, to avoid causing more bleeding or trauma to the tissue, make sure to soak the bandage thoroughly with water before gently peeling it off.

4. Adjust the frequency of dressing changes based on your activity level. You might need to change it 2–3 times a day when you're more active, but you can reduce this on days when you're less active to avoid disturbing the wound too much.
