hi,

i am 12 days post op after having my double ileostomy reversed. I had 11 staples  with a slight opening at the end of the wound to allow drainage. I had 8 of the 11 staples taken out 3 days ago and now the wound has widened. After a visit to A&E yesterday thinking it would need re stitching I was advised to leave it, dress it and it would heal but today there is fresh blood and it seems to be wider still and I don't know what to do.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this before? With Easter all GPs are closed and I really felt like I was wasting nhs time when going to A&E.

Thank you to anyone that may be able to help.

Hey Matt, I suggest you have your surgeon look at it. If you have WOCNs like we do in the USA, that would be my first choice. ER and A&E facilities are great for emergency stuff, but ostomates and reversal folks need special care. Just my thoughts.

Respectfully,

Mike

Yeah a year ago I wouldn't have known what to ask to find out I had a parastomal hernia. The only reason I knew about them is from this site. Thank goodness for this site. Otherwise I would still be clueless. If I hadn't though from stuff on here to ask my surgeon about having a hernia, then I would have never had the CT and I would have never known that she should have known about it a year ago.

Very helpful

hello mat

yes i open healed on all three of my last surgreys. for me i used (medihoney) works great on helping the body to heal. doctors didnt like that i knew of it but then when you ask the nurses they are suprized when you ask for it.

the big thing is the doctors dont know as much as the nurses when it comes to the care you need your wound care nurse should be your friend in helping you heal. they say its not a cheap but they are wrong i can buy it over the counter.  who cares what a small cost is out of pocket when it  healed me faster with it.  when you are changing there is a little blood cause your bandages sticking and tearing your wound  it stops in time.

one way to help with your changing is to take some water and squirt it on the bandages so they are soaking wet slowly peel off the bandage i changed my dressing 2 to 3 times a day depending on my activity during the days would cause me to change but if i wasnt doing anything i would change less on those days.
