Flexible Sigmoidoscopy After Ileostomy: What to Expect?

Flexible sigmoidoscopy is a procedure that some people with an ileostomy and a retained rectal stump might need to undergo. If you're scheduled for this procedure and feeling a bit anxious, here's what you can expect and some helpful advice from others who have been through it:

- The procedure involves inserting a flexible sigmoidoscope through the anus into the rectal stump. It usually takes about 5 minutes. During the exam, the doctor might introduce a small amount of air and take biopsies, but these steps are generally not painful.

- Most people report feeling minimal discomfort and no significant pain. However, if there is scar tissue or a narrowed rectal opening, you might experience some uncomfortable sensations.

- Minor bleeding can happen, especially if there is scar tissue or tissue damaged by radiation, but it is typically not serious.

- Full sedation is not usually offered for a routine flexible sigmoidoscopy. However, you can ask for a topical lidocaine gel to numb the anal canal and reduce any initial discomfort from the scope.

- Unlike a colonoscopy, no full bowel preparation is needed, making the process simpler.

- Some patients have regular sigmoidoscopies, such as every 3 to 6 months, to keep an eye on any remaining rectal or colon tissue.
