Pooping after Ileostomy - Need Advice

This topic is about the experience of passing material through the rectum after having an ileostomy, which can be surprising and concerning for some people. Here are some helpful insights and advice on this matter:

1. It is common for people with an ileostomy to pass mucus through the rectum. This mucus is produced by the unused section of the bowel and rectum and can sometimes be mixed with residual stool or old blood. It might feel like a bowel movement, but it is a normal occurrence after an ileostomy.

2. In the days following surgery, you might pass some residual stool that was left in the bowel if it wasn't completely cleared out before the operation. This should resolve quickly.

3. Mucus discharge can appear clear, yellowish, or slightly blood-tinged. This is generally normal unless the bleeding is heavy or persistent.

4. Many people find that they have routine urges to sit on the toilet daily or every other day to expel this fluid, and it becomes a part of their normal routine.

5. If you notice that the discharge becomes very bloody, increases significantly, or is accompanied by pain, signs of infection, or other concerning symptoms, it is important to seek medical evaluation promptly.

6. In some cases, recurrent bloody mucus can be due to specific issues, such as an unhealed colon perforation from previous treatments. This highlights the importance of professional assessment to identify any underlying causes.

7. While passing mucus and minor old blood is generally expected, it is always a good idea to discuss any concerns with an Enterostomal Therapy (ET) nurse or physician. They can help rule out complications and provide reassurance.
