Colonoscopy with an Ostomy/Stoma - Need advice on bag capacity and preparation

This topic is about preparing for a colonoscopy when you have an ostomy or stoma. It can be a bit nerve-wracking, especially if you're unsure about how the process will work with your stoma. Here are some helpful insights and advice to make the experience smoother:

- The colonoscopy will be done through your stoma, which means the colonoscope is inserted through the stoma instead of the rectum. The rest of the procedure is the same as a regular colonoscopy.

- You will need to drink the full amount of the prescribed bowel-cleansing solution to ensure your intestines are as clear as possible for the procedure.

- Consider using a drainable (open-end) pouch on the day of the prep and the procedure, even if you usually use a closed-end bag. This will make it easier to manage the liquid output, which can be emptied frequently. Staying near a toilet will help manage any capacity concerns.

- On the day of the procedure, you will change into a gown in the pre-op area, but you may be able to keep your underwear on. Remember to fast and complete the full prep the night before.

- You will not be able to drive yourself home after the procedure, so make sure to arrange for someone to pick you up.

- If you usually irrigate, doing an irrigation the night before the procedure can help ensure your bowel is as clean as possible.

These tips should help you feel more prepared and at ease for your colonoscopy with a stoma.
