Persistent rash under stoma wafer - Need help!

This topic is about dealing with a persistent rash that developed under a stoma wafer after switching to a new type of ostomy appliance. The rash has been itchy and severe, lasting for two months despite efforts to treat it. Here are some helpful tips and insights shared by others who have faced similar issues:

1. Check the wipes you are using. Antiseptic wipes can cause severe irritation, so make sure you are using adhesive-remover wipes instead.

2. Consider the possibility of an adhesive allergy. Some people react to the tape-style glue used in wafers. Switching to waxy, pectin-based wafers without tape edging has helped many people stop rashes.

3. Try different manufacturers and request samples to find one that suits your skin. Some people have had success with Hollister wafers, while others found Coloplast wafers either fell off or caused irritation.

4. Use a protective barrier. Eakin Cohesive® rings can create a seal that protects the skin around the stoma from both the output and the wafer adhesive.

5. Give your skin a break. You can attach the wafer to a homemade baseplate and keep it in place with an elastic belt overnight. This allows your skin to heal without direct contact with the adhesive.

6. Consider topical treatments that others have found helpful, such as Corona Ointment, which is available in the farm-supply or horse section and can help with rashes, burns, and eczema-like reactions.

7. Follow a skin-soothing routine. Take a warm shower with the appliance off, let the water run over the area for several minutes, towel-dry thoroughly, and then cover the area briefly with a dry towel to absorb any remaining moisture before reapplying your supplies.
