What to Expect at a Pre-Op Appointment?

When you're getting ready for an ostomy surgery, one of the important steps is attending a pre-operative appointment. This meeting usually happens a couple of weeks before your surgery date and is designed to ensure everything is in place for a successful procedure. If you're feeling anxious about what to expect, here's a simple breakdown of what typically happens during this appointment and some helpful advice:

1. During the pre-op review, the medical staff will confirm the details of your surgery. They'll also discuss your current medications, any medical conditions you have, past surgeries, and any hospital stays you've experienced.

2. Many hospitals will mark potential stoma locations during this appointment, although some might do it on the morning of the surgery. You often have a say in where the stoma will be placed, which can be reassuring.

3. Routine tests are part of the process. You can expect to have blood work done, provide a urine sample, and undergo an EKG. Some surgeons might also request chest and abdominal X-rays.

4. You'll need to complete some paperwork, including signing consent forms and other necessary hospital documents.

5. The medical team will give you detailed instructions on how to prepare for the surgery. This includes guidelines for bowel preparation and how to shower the night before and the morning of the surgery using a special antimicrobial soap. If you have allergies or severe motility issues, alternatives will be provided.

6. It's normal to feel anxious and experience occasional high blood pressure due to nerves. Remember, you're not alone in this, and maintaining a positive outlook can help manage pre-surgery jitters.
