Should I See a Doctor for My Shrinking Colostomy?

This topic is about a person who noticed that their colostomy, or stoma, seemed to shrink significantly after they went for a run. They felt some general discomfort but no pain and are wondering if this is something to worry about and whether they should see a doctor.

Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. It's normal for a stoma to change size. It can elongate or shrink as it moves waste through. When you run, your body diverts blood flow to your muscles, which might temporarily make your stoma smaller.

2. After running, check to see if your stoma returns to its usual size when you stop or lie down. This can help determine if the change is temporary.

3. It's common for stomas to shrink during the first year after surgery. If you've had pelvic radiation, continued shrinkage can also occur.

4. Be on the lookout for warning signs. If waste can't pass, you become constipated, feel significant pain, or if the stoma doesn't return to its normal size, it's important to consult a healthcare professional quickly.

5. Even if there's no pain, mild discomfort is a good reason to have an exam by your colorectal surgeon or a Wound Ostomy Continence (WOC) nurse. Make sure to have an up-to-date measurement of your stoma for the appointment.
