Scuba Diving with a Colostomy - Any Experiences?

Scuba diving after having a colostomy can be a concern for many, but it's definitely possible and can be safe with the right precautions. Here's what you need to know if you're considering diving with a colostomy:

- Many people with colostomies and ileostomies have been diving for years without any incidents, whether in warm or cold waters.

- Before diving, make sure to empty your pouch completely. It's also a good idea to avoid diving when you're close to needing a pouch change.

- Medical clearance is important. Dive shops often ask about ostomies on their medical forms. Most will allow you to dive if you have a doctor’s note. It's wise to get written approval from your gastroenterologist or surgeon and keep a copy with your dive paperwork to prevent any last-minute issues.

- When it comes to keeping your appliance secure in the water, experiences vary. Some divers don't use any additional products and have never experienced leakage. Others prefer to use a waterproof barrier over the flange or wafer for extra peace of mind. A product that is often mentioned is Sure Seal Rings, which are thin, transparent covers that stick over the flange to keep water out. These are usually available through regular medical-supply providers.

- More and more ostomy nurses and doctors recognize that scuba diving is possible for those with ostomies. However, it's crucial to get personalized medical advice.

- The community encourages you not to let an ostomy stop you from enjoying scuba diving or other water activities like freediving, surfing, or snorkeling.
