Experiences with a Scope Procedure Post-Stoma Surgery

The topic is about preparing for a scope procedure after having stoma surgery. The person asking the question is scheduled for their first scope since getting a stoma and is curious about how the procedure will be done and whether they need to follow the full bowel-prep routine. They are also on a medication called Stelara and are hopeful it is effective.

Here are some helpful insights and advice from others who have been through similar experiences:

1. In some medical centers, the traditional full bowel prep might not be necessary for people with a stoma. For example, one person was advised to avoid solid food for 24 hours before the scope and to stop consuming anything after midnight. However, they were allowed to have clear items like popsicles, and they enjoyed a bag of banana-flavored popsicles. The scope was performed through the stoma without any issues and was completed quickly.

2. Other facilities might still require a light prep. Another person shared that they had to drink two small carbonated bottles of prep solution, each about 1½ cups, one the night before and another on the morning of the procedure. The endoscopy was done through the stoma, and they did not experience any discomfort or have any lasting memory of the procedure.
