Need advice on muffling ostomy sounds - any suggestions?

This topic is about finding ways to reduce the sounds of gas and liquid output from a colostomy, especially after a small-bowel resection. The person involved has been dealing with liquid output for over three months and is concerned about the noise it makes in social situations and during long flights. They are looking for practical solutions without using medications like Imodium.

Here are some helpful suggestions:

1. **External Sound Muffling:**
- When sitting, place a coat, sweater, or pillow over your abdomen to help muffle the sounds. This is a simple and cost-free method.

2. **Internal Sound Muffling:**
- Before attaching a new pouch, insert a flat oval or round cotton makeup-remover pad through the flange opening so it rests on the stoma side. Once the pouch is in place, the pad will moisten and lightly adhere to the stoma, absorbing or breaking the force of gas and reducing noise. This method is effective even if you irrigate every other day, as the stool will simply push the pad downward without causing issues. These pads are inexpensive and disposable.

3. **Reducing Gas Production:**
- Use Beano in liquid form, as it acts faster than tablets. About 10 drops taken directly can help digest gas-forming sugars in food, reducing the amount of gas entering the pouch. The liquid form is generally more effective than tablets.

Combining these strategies can be beneficial. Use Beano to reduce gas production, place a cotton pad in the pouch for ongoing noise reduction, and keep a jacket or small cushion handy for extra discretion during flights or social events.
