Had Fistula Surgery Today

I had fistula surgery today. My surgeon took out the setons and cut open the fistula track. I have an incision in my butt that looks like a pothole hole. Thankfully I have an Ileostomy and no stool passes through there, so it should heal quicker. Does this cure the fistula? Can it come back after the incision closes? Anyone else gone through this surgery?

The surgery removed the fistula. I haven't had the surgery but I'd assume you could get a new fistula. The odds will depend on what caused your first fistula. But at least this one is gone. Focus on healing and don't worry too much about a new fistula that may never come.

After colon-resectioning, I  developed two E-fistulas. The fistulas had to be removed surgically and I was left with a colostomy until my colon healed. I developed many complications both pre and post fistula surgery - leading to 3+ months in the hospital and rehab. My colostomy was supposed to be temporary. After talking with my surgeons, I was informed the reconnection would be as bad or worst than my prior surgeries since my body struggled to heal — I was told I would probably develop fistulas again if I had the reconnection surgery. This was enough for me to keep my colostomy.

Your fistula is gone — can't come back. If the situation that led to the first fistula is reintroduced, you could develop another fistula.

Good information there. I am looking at a probable fistula surgery in the near future and this is helpful to me.

I doubt that I will have much choice in the surgery (not doing it would lead to getting sicker) but forewarned is forearmed.

I should have said " I was told I would probably develop fistulas again if I had the reconnection surgery."

I edited my prior post to incorporate the above correction. I regret any confusion I caused.

I’m probably not going to be reconnected to my jpouch. I think my Ileostomy is permanent. Fistulas will probably come back if I get reconnected.

I have had many fistula's that I have lost count. One of my surgeons said that my butt looks like a war zone. Alas, u will probably get more fistula's as they leave tracks that literally branch out in all different directions and there's no way that anyone can stop them from happening. I wish that I had better news for you šŸ˜”

Nancy from your discussion it seems you are talking about anal fistulas. These fistulas are difficult to manage due to the risk of fecal incontinence. Other fistulas don't have the same problem with recurrences

There are numerous surgical techniques for attempting  to treat anal fistulas.

A fistulectomy (Fe) involves a complete excision of the fistulous tracts, thereby eliminating the risk of secondary tract formation. With complete lesion removal, the recurrence rate is greatly reduced. However, a longer operating time and a longer healing process are required because the wound is wider than in other procedures and a higher incontinence rate is possible.

In my case, I have a colonic (gastrointestinal) fistula and the section of colon with the fistula was totally removed and I was given a colostomy.

I was advised if I got a reconnection, I probably would get another fistula and the other complications that resulted from my initial colon resectioning.

I have provided a figure that lists the different surgical techniques available for addressing anal fistulas. Notice that the fistulectomy (Fe) has a low fistula recurrence rate.

Not fun! Hopefully yours is not causing too much trouble.

Mine is draining 250 ml of fluid into my pelvis every day. Eventually we need it to stop. Lol

Well,  so far, mine is suspected, but could be fact. If it is in my power, I will not submit to another scan, or more invasive stuff again.  Do I know for certain?  Not.
