I am about two weeks post-surgery with my colostomy. When my stoma is about to give output and while it is giveing output, I have some fairly miserable cramping pains. Is this normal? Will it get better as I heal from surgery? Is there a way to prevent cramps or at least alleviate the cramping? I appreciate any help from mates. I see my surgeon this week but I doubt he'll have much advice for this.

what does your output look like ? is it formed ? are you drinking plenty of fluids to stay hydrated ?  since you surgery is recent its possible your just experiencing a little tenderness from the wound site.  i would be concerned if you had cramping but NO OUTPUT . i would just moniter things for a bit but if you have severe pain i would seek a professional advice. what was the reason for your surgery ? good luck, keep us posted of your progress. regards mmsh

If I was a relative newbie with an ostomy, I have no doubt that this site would be very helpful to me.  The members are quick to respond to questions and issues and they are filled with experience.  When I joined, I already had a lifetime with an ostomy, so I just regard it as a place to meet and communicate with other folks similarly situated.  Either way, it is a good site.

Hi Catfan. Is it possible your appliance might be too tight around the stoma? That was my experience. Please let us know your progress.

Respectfully,

Mike

Two weeks post op, I do not know anything about the colostomy but two weeks after my operation for my illeostomy the plumbing was inflamed because of the operation within the first day they had to put a tube in because nothing would past through I was in so much pain even with the pain killer drip. With in  a week and a half I was released from the hospital and had my first blockage on the first day out which sent me right back in the hospital for another week. The size of my intestine was the size of a straw to pass waste through. I figure after a colostomy surgery it might be similar that the size of you intestine is swollen and makes it harder to pass things through. Stay in contact with you ostomy nurse and doctor support staff as you heal up for advise when things do not seem right. Not passing output through is a sign of a problem. Your intestine has involuntary muscle contractions so if something is not moving through each time it contracts you will feel discomfort and pain depending if something is having issues moving through or not moving at all. Check out the website on things that are ok to eat and not. They will apply alot especially after surgery.
