Can any of you folks give me ideas of a safe diet to go on with having an ileostomy?  I need to lose about 15 to 20 lbs. I have been cautious about dieting as I was worried I would mess something up. I've had my ileostomy since February 2018. I am able to eat salad and most vegtables now and most other foods. I usually eat a bagle and coffee for breakfast, sometimes a sandwich for lunch but sometimes no lunch.  I do eat dinner most nights but nothing fancy. It is usually soup and salad or spagetti or other pasta. Sometimes I have a small steak and salad. I am not near a gym but if I was I would swim.  I would like to lose around my mid section which is where the weight all seemed to settle. I don't want to hurt my stomach or get a hernia but would like to know if there is any safe exercises that could help me to lose around my belly area. I have issues with my balance after a client beat me in the head so sometimes walking long distances can be a challange but not always.  There are some days I do ok walking for long periods.  The last time I walked for a fair amout of time, I fell and broke my foot. When I was beaten, I received a closed head injury and sometimes my brain doesn't recognize that I am on an uneaven surface. So I could use a few suggestions if you can share them.  Thanks everyone!

Very helpful

You posted twice. No real diet l am on. I only eat twice a day, breakfast and supper. No pie or cake and portion control. Meat, potatoes/pasta, and vegetables each about the size of a deck of cards. That seems to maintain me. My wife tried Weight Watchers. You could look into one of those.

For exercise do you have a bike? You my want to get some walking sticks for balance. Or try a treadmill.

Hi gang,

I was thinking what a great resource this site has been for me since I found it. It would have been really helpful, but maybe a bit scary, to have found it before my ostomy, but that's water under the bridge. But I got thinking about it, and now I'm questioning why doctors and hospitals don't provide this site's contact info to any patient even considering an ostomy today. And how can we change that so potential ostomates can learn about the road ahead for them by getting on here and asking questions before the docs go chop-chop. How exactly do you get all hospitals to provide their patients specific information, like this website?

I just happened to find this site something like 4 years after my ostomy when I Googled "ostomy forum" or something like that. But I never found it during previous searches.....so I found this site pretty much by pure luck. We need to find a way to make this site available to new or soon-to-be ostomates......as that's when we really need to commiserate with fellow ostomates. Anybody have any thoughts on how we do this?

Thanks,

Bob

The Adkins diet has always worked well. Not sure about with an ileostomy. My deal with dieting is to cut anything white out of my diet and I can l lose weight. That is rice, bread, pasta, potatoes. All the good things! And of course sugar.
drink lots of water which you are probably doing anyway.
good luck.

I would try plain yogurt and organic vegetables. Egg whites for breakfast and No bread or pasta. Do this strictly for 30 days. Exercise every other day with cardio type exercises and after 30 -45 days you can loose 15-20 lbs
