Is Rinsing with Water Enough for Night Drainage Bags?

Greetings,

I like to use my Medline night drainage bag. It is easy to drain and easy to rinse out. After it is drained, I just put the input tube under the faucet and let it mostly fill. Then, shake a bit and just drain it again. I do this every morning.

So my question is, is this good enough to care for the night drainage bag? I have heard to use vinegar or some other chemical, but it seems that just rinsing it with water each time is good enough.

Is it good enough??? (Urostomy)

Hi Gary,

I don't have one........but am intrigued..........but water is nature's solvent....so sounds fine.  Besides, you just wipe your ass with dry paper and everyone thinks that's ok.......unless you have a bidet!  Seriously, I would think a little Dawn dishwashing liquid every now and then wouldn't hurt anything and would make it squeeky clean........but I wouldn't use anything harsher than that.  But I'm sure others who actually use them will chime in.

regards,

bob

I’ve only been on this site a little bit, I hardly know how to navigate it, LOL! I just want to say that everyone seems so kind and supportive to each of the members and it’s not only helpful, it makes me happy that there really are so many nice people in this world that can sometimes feel so bleak and cold. I didn’t even know about this site until I found it by accident. I think the hospital staff should bring it to their patients’ attention. Thanks to all, even if you’re just listening!

  Hi Gary,

Just rinsing it out with water over the toilet works fine for me. It simply works. (At home anyway).

Hi Gary, yes it's fine to treat your night drainage bag the way you do. I've been doing it this way for 13 years now, and never had a problem. I can re use the same bag for weeks, sometimes longer.  I usually swap to a new one once the drainage tap starts to wear out, I'm afraid of it leaking. I have a much better sleep using the night drainage bag, but I still have to get up through the night to empty my ileostomy bag.  So no problems, just keep rinsing out as you have been.
