Factoids

2011 Radical Cystectomy Ileal Conduit

Age 68 F
No UTI infections for 9 years

12/20/20 after intermittent fasting and Keto Light for 7 months, lost abdominal fat and hernia grew and shifted. Tests reveal everything is functioning correctly with no pain.

12/20/20 - 1/20/22 various antibiotics to fight infecting gram-negative bugs failed and bugs repopulated after 2 weeks of stopping antibiotics.

Four ER visits, five days IV antibiotic hospital stay.

Urology referred me to an infectious disease specialist and advised there's nothing he can do except further corrective surgery which would present more dangers. Symptoms do not indicate anything that can be addressed by the specialists.

Cost over 75k.

Disabled because of symptoms that make being a reliable employee impossible. I need to work and bring in a small income to augment SS.

------------

What I'm Doing

Tons of Pre/Probiotics and supplements

Mild exercise with tightly secured hernia band for support.

Biofilm investigating research about how bacteria reinfects ureters, stoma, etc.

Negatively charged living area via Himalayan Salt Lamp

Moving electronics out of the sleeping area.

Food Keto Light - 50 g protein, 100 g carbs, 20 g fiber - Intermittent Fasting 17:7

No Covid Vax due to CKD Bactrim interaction

7 AM 1/4 tsp of baking soda in water on an empty stomach... increased urine pH 9 said to assist the immune system in countering growth.

QUESTION

How can an ostomate strengthen our immune system to fight back against these gram-negative mucus-embedded bugs and not eventually acquire C Diff?

I don't know the answers. I've been eating better food, daily walking, multivitamins, meditation, energy healing, laughter, etc in hopes of a better immune system.
Hopefully someone will come along with more information for you.

Hi Deb,

As you can see, the outpouring of love and support from this website will help you to find the strength to lift yourself up and out of your current emotional situation. I am lucky to have my husband by my side through all of this, so I will not even pretend to know how you feel and what you're going through alone. I do know that I have great friends on this site and in my life that have been by my side, and hopefully you have many by your side as well. You do have a lot of new friends here. Please feel free to talk through anything that is on your mind. We all go through a confidence deficit when we go through an ostomy surgery. Our body has been marred and your mind feels that way sometimes too. It is tough to move on, but you will. You will be stronger once you realize that you are still the beautiful woman you were prior to your surgery. Hopefully, you can reach out to a local support group and find some additional friends in your same situation. It always helps to have a sounding board wherever you find it!

Very helpful
Hi, I have an ileal conduit also, and suffered from continuous UTI's and kidney infections. The only answer for me was, the doctor put me on a daily antibiotic, permanently, for the rest of my life. If I stop taking the antibiotics, I get a UTI within a week or so. Sometimes I skip a day here and there, to give my body a break from the antibiotics, that seems to work for me. I don't believe there's any other way to stop the bacteria from developing. Maybe you could try Cranberry capsules, or drinking Cranberry juice, that works for some, for a limited time.

Acceptance on this is difficult. The journey continues. Thanks for comments.

Wondering what daily antibiotic you are on. Please advise me if you can.
