Has anyone had any success treating diversion colitis with anything other than mesalamine suppositories or enemas? We desperately need some help!  It’s causing my daughter to have reoccurring UTI’s.  Thanks for any help!

Hi there, I just started a post on this horrible problem!! Then I saw your post!

I had this horrible condition for years. I have a disconnected J pouch because of pouchitis. I think the whole problem was diversion colitis.

I used Flagyl, and it helped a little. Someone suggested Flagyl and Cipro together, so I gave it a try. I can't say with scientific certainty, but after two doses (courses) of each, my cramping, pain, and leakage from my (disconnected) butt stopped!! I have not had a serious problem since!!

I used to have terrible cramping pain in my abdomen and gripping stabbing pain in the rectum and anal area. I would be on my knees on the floor doubled over with pain often. The local doc would come and give me a shot of morphine or pethidine (Demerol). I read everything I could find, but a post on this site gave me the answer.

I cannot guarantee it will work, but it worked for me, Flagyl and cyprofloxacin taken an hour apart, approximately, for the full course...7 to 10 days. Some docs may want "proof" for the Cipro; my doc is very good and believes me when I ask her for something she wouldn't normally do...Cipro without tests to prove I need it (not narcotics of any kind...very strict on that 👍👍). I hope you can try this; it will do no harm but could be your solution.

I used a steroid foam {Colifoam} applied into the rectum also, to bring down inflammation; it works really well. It has a plastic syringe tip to insert into the anus, but the area may be too sensitive. I had to squirt some foam on my fingertip and try to gently get some inside and rub it around the area close to the opening...it will be absorbed. It would have been too dangerous for me to insert the plastic tube/syringe tip; it would have caused a scratch in there...something to be avoided at all costs!!! Very bad!!! Wear a glove and cut the fingernail as low as possible. It's not a fun job for another person to have to do, but the Colifoam will make a difference and give some relief.

I used to describe it as having a golf ball covered with sharp spikes shoved inside my butt and leaving it there. It hurt to stand, to sit, to lie down, etc., etc... I can actually ride my mountain bike now over rough ground!!! I sincerely hope it works ☘💚

All the best... Magoo ☘💚👍

In both of my cases, I had no choice. It was surgery or be put 6 feet under! I thank God that He has been with me all these times. Without Him, I never would have known what to do and might not have gone to the hospital when I did. I don't know if you have had your surgery or not yet but I hope you will hang out on this website when you are done. I have learned a great deal through the people here and it is so great having others who have had the same thing done and been through what you are about to or have gone through. The only thing I have turned down is a reversal of the ileostomy. When the doctors did the emergency rebuilding of my original ileostomy this last February, I told them I did not want to go through this again. My doctor told me at that time that I was no longer a candidate for the reversal. In a way, I was very relieved. The last three years of my life have been a nightmare for me. I do not want to go through any of it again. If you wish to be rehooked up and they say you are a good choice for that, research it carefully. Every surgery I have ever had except for Old and New Maxine and the emergency surgery on my broken foot, I have spent weeks researching. I recently had my C5 C6 disk in my neck replaced with an artificial one. I went to my pre-op with 2 pages of questions for the doctor. I knew everything that they were going to do and could talk intelligently with them. I always try to research my adversaries! Don't cancel your surgery. It is nice not to have to suffer any longer with horrible pain. We all had to change a few things around when we had our surgeries but in the long run, most of us are glad we did it. I know I am. Good luck to you!
