Alternative Treatments for Diversion Colitis?

This topic is about exploring alternative treatments for diversion colitis, a condition that can cause inflammation and lead to issues like repeated urinary tract infections. The focus is on finding options other than mesalamine suppositories or enemas to help manage the symptoms.

Here are some suggestions and insights shared by others:

1. Combination Oral Antibiotics:
- Some people have found success by combining Flagyl (metronidazole) with Cipro (ciprofloxacin) when Flagyl alone wasn't enough.
- The typical approach involves taking both medications about an hour apart for a full 7- to 10-day course.
- It's recommended to ask for both antibiotics together, though some doctors might want to do cultures before prescribing ciprofloxacin.
- After completing two full courses, symptoms like abdominal cramping, rectal pain, and mucous leakage were reported to have resolved completely.

2. Topical Steroid Therapy:
- Colifoam (hydrocortisone acetate rectal foam) can be effective in quickly reducing rectal inflammation.
- If the plastic applicator provided is uncomfortable, you can apply the foam using a gloved fingertip with a trimmed nail to gently spread it just inside the anal canal, avoiding any scratching of sensitive tissue.
- Users have experienced rapid pain relief and an improved ability to sit, stand, and carry on with normal activities.

3. Procedural Caution:
- It's important to avoid inserting rigid applicators or anything that might scratch the rectal mucosa, as even small scratches can increase pain and the risk of infection.
