Gonna try filter/pouch, bag blows up at times...things I eat, don't like opening/resealing all the time, will give this a go - as well still waiting for hernia belt, been using tensor wrap...sure helps with breathing, standing, walking, hernia part of surgeries, removed stomach muscles. Without belt, seems like pregnant, never what it looks like - lol

Recently, I have used a pouch with the filter (Convatec). Interestingly, I found the filters on the shorter appliances to be ineffective regarding odor protection (has activated charcoal). The higher output pouches with the filters are much more effective regarding odor elimination. Also, note that I have found that with the shorter pouches, fecal material does back out through the filter and will soil.

Hubz had a regular checkup with the oncologist on Friday (his numbers are improving), and as they were asking how he's feeling since surgery, they became curious about how he's doing so well with his ostomy, both physically and mentally. He credited doing research online, trying different things, and especially the support from this group. They were asking because they see so many patients struggling to adjust.

We described this group as folks with every kind of ostomy, some for days while others for decades, but all willing to share what's worked for them with the caveat that every individual is different.

We described the most valuable element as feeling like you're not alone in this. That really piqued their interest, and they wrote down the link. It seems they had a few people in mind that might benefit from the community and thanked us for telling them about it.

You know, we can't remember exactly who we learned about this group from, but we're grateful for it every day! Thank you all! 🌻

Been with Hollister since August 20, trying to stay with the same brands. My brother-in-law owns a health supply store, and my sister is a nurse - helpful. I will try out a new filter/pouch next week.

I wish there were a perfect solution for this issue. I, too, don't like the pouch ballooning up. That can be solved but does look and feel weird at times. I clearly remember this causing at least one blowout on a trip to Mexico.
I've since switched to filters. Mercutio is correct; the filters leak and odor control isn't perfect, but it wasn't perfect pre-ostomy either, so...?
Is anyone aware of a manufacturer with an impressive filter? I won't be switching away from filters anytime soon. Hoping to learn more.

Loren4,
Well, as I said above, the high output Convatec pouches with the filters are much better, and what I like about them is that they come with replaceable filters, so if there is some odor after a while, you can just put in a new one. If you call Convatec and talk to a nurse there (they are more than happy to help), they will gladly send you free samples. I used Hollister for 31 years and have recently switched after talking to and dealing with Convatec. Here is their number: 1-800-422-8811. They refer to it as their customer interaction center. Give it a try.
