Hi all, I'm awaiting surgery to have a urostomy and a possible colostomy after my cancer coming back. I'm wondering how long I will have to stay in the hospital? My consultant says a minimum of 10 days! As it's coming up to Christmas, I'm quite worried about missing Christmas. Added to that, the hospital is about 60 miles from my home and loved ones. I'm not looking forward to this and could do with someone to message me with some words of wisdom or advice! Thanks.

Hello cb250ndriver. It's understandable that you would like to be at home for Christmas and I would not wish to diminish the importance of this for you. However, with a slight shift in perspective you might come to appreciate your time in hospital a little more, whenever it is. Think of all those doctors, nurses and other hospital staff that are also giving up their Christmas - to look after you. In my experience these staff all try to make Christmas as good a time as they can for all those who are unfortunate enough to be hospitalised at that time.(including themselves!)There is rarely ever a 'good-time'to have these things done but perhaps it should be seen more as an 'appropriate' time from the point of view of your personal health. Anyway, whether or not you are in hospital or at home I hope the time for you is well-spent. Best wishes Bill

I’d like to write a nice review
that might express something quite new.
Then I read previous points of view,
which said the things I wanted to.
I would endorse the things I’ve read
about what other folks have said,
for these are the benefits and things
that joining a site like this can bring.
When I was an initiate, (novice)
it seemed to be appropriate
to express myself in rhyme
as this is how I spend my time.
When contemplating what to write
with contributing to this site,
it seemed to me, my ostomy
could be expressed in poetry.
Thus, when I had something to say,
a rhyme, for me seemed the best way,
for rhymes can often capture stuff
that prose don’t capture quite enough.
I do appreciate the way,
this site lets people have their say
in whatever mode they will
about the things that make them ill.
There are not many forums for
discussing stuff most folks abhor.
So, this site fulfils a small niche,
where angst and problems can unleash.
Where raw emotions can decant,
so, folks feel free to have a rant,
and we can all associate
is something I appreciate.

Hiya cb250 rider (love the name btw, I'm a biker's girlfriend ha ha!), while I understand what Bill is saying, I can totally understand why you don't want to be in the hospital for Christmas. I've got ongoing problems still, and the threat of being admitted again is always hanging over me, and all I'm thinking now is please don't let me be in for Christmas! If you really don't want to be and you can cope until then, then I'd say speak to your consultant and say you want to wait until after Christmas, and I'm sure they would understand. I couldn't say how long you would have to be in after the op, I was in for two months which involved two further ops, so I was a special case! Ha ha, hope you're keeping well for now. Sophie x

Hi cb, I agree with Sophie; talk to your doctor. I was in the hospital for 2 Christmases but was able to postpone others until after. Most times, it can wait a few weeks, but if not, then by all means have it done! You can celebrate Christmas afterwards; that's what I have done. Good luck to you!

Had a colostomy, not urostomy, but I was in for 12 days after surgery. Hope yours is shorter! Be at peace, whatever happens, and don't go home too soon!
