I had an illeostomy for 3 yrs. Parastomal hernia repaired and now I have a colostomy. I have developed a granuloma on my stoma. It doesn't hurt and doesn't bleed much at all but im wondering if anyone can suggest a way to help get rid of them or at least make it smaller. Never happened with my illeostomy. I've been told silver nitrate applied by my stoma nurse is the only treatment but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask anyone here as this site has been so helpful to me.

Very helpful

Hi jal,

You need to get yourself a silver nitrate stick or two. You can find them on Amazon, and you can buy them individually or in any number. Easy-peasy.

I want to thank everyone for their suggestions, messages, and tips! So many have helped! We are learning as we go, learning the ins and outs of this bag. I have ordered special tape that does not irritate my skin and am now using Domeboro powder before putting on a new bag. My boyfriend says that my skin is so much less red!

Saw an ostomy nurse today; she said my boyfriend is doing everything right. One of my issues is that I am really thin, and my skin is really crinkly due to the surgery. We shall see how this bag goes.

This site is a real blessing. Everyone here is so awesome!

Hi Shamrock!

Glad to have come across your post. I wonder if wearing my hernia belt too tight has caused granulomas on my stoma. I never had that problem before and am 8 months out from colostomy surgery.

Bob, did you or do you know how the silver nitrate sticks work? I ordered some but don't know what to do. I have an appointment with a stoma nurse next week and was wondering about the process. If I try it beforehand, do I just rub it on the granuloma? I googled it, and it just said how the granuloma will go from white to black/grey and then slowly fall off, but it didn't say if I should expect anything else. Do I wipe it after? Does it hurt? I'm asking a lot of you, I know, but you gave a great suggestion, and I was hoping you had done this yourself. Thanks so much.
