Has anyone had their stoma nurse use silver nitrate on a granuloma? Going next week to have it done and was wondering what the process is. I read where people here did it themselves and was wondering so I know what to expect. How long will I go to my nurse for treatments? How long to see granuloma getting small, etc. I wasn't able to ask the nurse when I booked the appt. She will answer my questions when I get there she said but im really curious. Anyone? People here told me I could do it myself but I was afraid so I booked an appt with the stoma clinic

Hi jal,

The silver nitrate literally burns the granuloma off.  Silver nitrate is nitric acid and the silver acts as a cauterizing agent to stop the bleeding.  The moisture of the granuloma triggers the silver nitrate to start burning it away and then the silver stops the wound from bleeding excessively.  It's painless, so don't worry about it.  It takes a few applications usually, as you don't want to hold the silver nitrate on the granuloma until you feel a lot of pain.  Each silver nitrate stick can be reused a number of times, so don't use it once and toss it.  You can continue using it until all the silver nitrate is used up.  Hope this helps.

Silver nitrate sticks are available on Amazon. I do it myself whenever necessary. Sometimes what you are seeing is lymphoid tissue in the bowel wall. It is okay to treat and should not be painful unless the silver nitrate comes in contact with the skin. Just remember, every minute little bump does not need to be treated.
