DOUSE.

When we tend to douse something
it’s water that we ought to bring
to either throw over it,  or
plunge it in water galore.

Dousing is a great technique
for cleaning things that are unique
as it’s less likely to damage stuff
because the method is not rough.

I douse my stoma once a day
with a small cup, which has a way
of cleaning it and its surround,
which is quite handy, I have found.

A small amount of water will
without any great deal of skill
within the cup against the skin
will help the cleaning to begin.

It’s an effective piece of kit
that soaks the mucus and the shit
sufficiently to loosen it
and, in this way, we benefit.

Gunge can then be wiped away
without a chance that we might pay
by damaging the stoma, or
making it seem red and raw.

I find adhesive residue
and any other sort of glue
will also be released by this,
so I’m less likely to come amiss.

I like to douse my stoma, so
I know that all the crap will go
and I’ll be ready to proceed
in ways, I’m likely to succeed.

There’s lots of things about the house

I find are better when I douse

Them, milk on a bowl of corn flakes, or

Syrup on pancakes, more & more.

To douse just means to drench

What ever needs it.  Be a mensch

And honor stuff that likes a whopping

Pour of, say, raspberry topping.

All gourmands will keep around the house

Plentiful picks with which to douse.

Fay,

I am one of those few people who still have a lot of output at night. However, I suffer from short gut syndrome after seven bowel surgeries that led to the loss of much of my small intestine as well as my large intestine from the initial bowel cancer surgery. It does get better over time as your system adjusts, but an ileostomy can be a challenging adjustment. It's important to connect with a good Enterostomal Nurse - ET nurses who can help you problem-solve over time. It's been five years since my initial surgery, and I had a great visit with a new ET nurse in December. He really helped me with the problem of high output at night. I had been getting up every 90-120 minutes to empty my high output bag because of filling. If I slept for three hours without emptying, I would have problems. My ET nurse helped my husband and me make a nighttime collection system using a Rubbermaid juice container with a handle and my old CPAP hose. This is connected to one of my two-piece high output bags and allows for continual drainage. It isn't pretty, but it has been a real lifesaver. I guess the real message I want to share is to stick with it, find a nurse who you can work with, and together you will find solutions to whatever challenges you face. This website is also an important support for me and others. There is nothing you will go through that others haven't already faced and figured out. There is so much wisdom here. Read the materials they've put together for newbies. There are a lot of great suggestions to use. I hope things get better quickly for you.

LOL  Spray cream??  Is that what you call whipped cream in England??  Definitely a good topping, and gravy too, though on different things, of course.

Our Deputy Prime Minister's mother was illiterate (I've done some work on educating health professionals about the incidence and management of low/no literacy), and she talked once about how her mother sprayed shaving cream on an apple pie! Whipping cream is when you have to do the hard yards to whip it to stiffness. Spray cream comes in tins and is considered to be a bit common here! I've been here 40 years and still haven't got a grip on class definers!! I know you go to the lavatory here if you're posh, the loo or toilet if you're working class. I was at an event once and one woman wouldn't tell me where the “bathroom” was until I called it the lavatory. I was very tempted to wee on her feet. I'm not great with snobbery! 😂😁
