I used a marathon stick, and my skin is on fire. What am I doing wrong?

Hi.. hey, I see you are only 3 weeks into an ileo - post-op.

Welcome. The best I could offer as an ileo myself is to say that the product you are using could be toxic to your skin.

I'd start there. If you have another brand, try it.

The one you are using, you can place on the opposite side just to confirm it is the problem.

It's your testing area. And if it irritates your skin on the other side, then it proves that product is bad for your skin.

This happens. And you are lucky being so brand new dealing with it now at 3 weeks.

You can call your doctor or nurse

and get a quick replacement.

It sure sounds like an allergic reaction to me.

Have you been leaking at all? This too will be a burning cause and effect reaction.

Nervous but excited about tomorrow. I have been reading some of the threads here and am brand new to the site. I am grateful to have had the ileostomy so my body had a chance to heal but am truly hoping all goes well with the operation and future.

I have a collapsed disk in my back and sleeping on it for the past 7 months because of the bag has caused me constant daily excruciating pain. I haven't slept through the night and have had so many accidents.

I am so glad I found this site. Gained so much information so I am much better prepared for what happens post operation and what worked for people diet and supplement (fiber) wise. Thank you for that.

Thank you so much for replying. I am having a hard time also getting a seal to stick. I was having a problem leaking and very raw around the ilio, which is why I tried the marathon. It was on fire right away, like it was a leak. I just changed the bag again and used barrier wipes and powder. It has let up finally. I don't think I'll use it again.

Hi.. I'm glad my advice may have helped ease the issue.

There are people who have very sensitive skin. The products being used will affect those people like you.

So for you, marathon is a bad choice.

For me, it was the O-ring called Eakin. I placed a thread/topic out. (Almost a warning really)

How badly in 8 months using it made my skin bleed and break open.

You cannot get anything to stick to raw skin like that, but believe it or not, there are a few hacks offered by members who got around the irritated skin, which eventually healed.

It's important you mention when the time comes how toxic marathon was for you. Of course, there could be others too or not, but for Eakin, there was a large number of members who can't tolerate it.

You will see/hear from former marathon members replying to your thread.

Sit tight. The welcome wagon and suggestions are rounding up. I will check in on you later. 👋

Hi Ptaters, don't use anything with alcohol in it around the stoma, as that skin is more sensitive.

Hi there,

I had a reaction to Marathon too. I would use the 3M Advanced Skin Protectant instead. Not sure if you know about that one. It's the same concept, works the same type of way, and made for the same thing. And to me, it worked much better than the Marathon.
