What the heck is up with carrots? I eat canned carrots because they are super soft, and I chew them, I think, relatively well. Yet, they come out in my bag every time. Why can't I digest carrots? Even the softest ones on earth.

Are you cooking them? Slow cook them in the oven or crock pot; they will mush as soon as you eat them.

Where's Bugs Bunny when you need him?

Hi Deb,

As you can see, the outpouring of love and support from this website will help you to find the strength to lift yourself up and out of your current emotional situation. I am lucky to have my husband by my side through all of this, so I will not even pretend to know how you feel and what you're going through alone. I do know that I have great friends on this site and in my life that have been by my side, and hopefully you have many by your side as well. You do have a lot of new friends here. Please feel free to talk through anything that is on your mind. We all go through a confidence deficit when we go through an ostomy surgery. Our body has been marred and your mind feels that way sometimes too. It is tough to move on, but you will. You will be stronger once you realize that you are still the beautiful woman you were prior to your surgery. Hopefully, you can reach out to a local support group and find some additional friends in your same situation. It always helps to have a sounding board wherever you find it!

I always thought that was normal for carrots; it's how they've always come out of me for over 30 years. They've never caused me any blockages.

G-Day Mindy,

The one and only blockage I have had, and it was a big one, was with a cardamom seed, so count yourself lucky. When you say you won't be controlled by your stoma and you eat anything, well, sorry, but you're going to get a rude awakening one day. Regards, IGGIE

PS Do you have an ileostomy or a colostomy? You will get away with it if you have a colostomy.

Mindy, is this reply meant to go to me? Not sure why it's directed toward me. And that doesn't surprise me if you're eating fresh garlic for that to come out that way. And you eat whatever your heart desires, just be careful you don't end up with a blockage or massive blockage that results in another surgery, which hopefully you don't. It's good you're not afraid and there shouldn't be fear, and a stoma doesn't have to control your life; you just have to get creative. And yes, with an ileo, there are things that should be avoided and for a good reason.

They are canned so they already mush in my mouth. I do heat them up on the stove. But they are very soft.

I'm not so much worried about them causing a blockage; I just wonder why, when they are so soft, they come out in my bag. I still eat them. I hope I am getting some nutrition out of them. I guess that is more what I am wondering. Am I getting any nutrition out of them?

I so don't eat whatever I want. I am careful.

I am coming up on the anniversary of when I was in the hospital with a blockage. It was one of the most miserable experiences of my life. Not the most...that would be when I got my first stoma. And they took out my large intestines. But having a blockage is no picnic either. I don't want to get another blockage, so I am careful.

Television and DVD.  Bugs is the ultimate animated connoisseur of raw carrots.

Be careful of the sodium content of canned foods.  Canned carrots are a good source of fat soluble vitamins, like vitamin A.  Also minerals, protein, fats, and carbs.  But canning reduces water soluble vitamins, like vitamin C.  The canning process heats up carrots, reducing the possibility of ingesting a contaminated carrot and getting sick.

Why do they appear in an ileostomy bag?

Carrots are high in fiber, making them harder to digest.  Foods high in fiber, like raw vegetables, can clump together and get stuck in the small intestine, causing a blockage.

A natural fiber that holds fruits, vegetables, nuts, and grains together is Cellulose.  Humans can't digest it in the small intestine.

Wishing a happy and healthy New Year.

I get no-salt-added canned carrots, so they are low in sodium. The canned carrots aren't raw, so I didn't think there would be a problem, but it does seem like there is a problem. Or not a problem, but just a rejection of the carrots. I do chew them even though they are mushy and soft, but still see bits in the bag. So, am I getting the vitamins like A, and minerals, and protein, and fats, and carbs? I think I am getting the carbs, fats, and protein. LOL. My weight hasn't moved a muscle in 4 days now. Well, until today, it went down a pound. But the last 4 days, it was the same. I think carbs and fat must get absorbed right away. Because even when I was bulimic, I tended not to lose that much weight. So, I think calories, fat, and carbs get absorbed faster than vitamins. I don't know, maybe I am crazy. Just made me wonder if I was absorbing any nutrition from the carrots because if I am not, then I just won't eat them anymore.
