Two days ago, I had my ileostomy reversed. Surgery went well. The site where the stoma was is extremely painful. Literally, I can't stand up. I'm afraid to take an opioid because of the adverse effect of constipation.

Advice would be appreciated.

Nonsense, dude. What pain reliever are you talking about?

Your doc gave you oxy? Take it as minimally as possible and feel better.

That stuff is good. Just don't overuse it.

What did the doc prescribe? Are you still allowed hydration drinks?

Man, don't suffer in pain. Recovery takes time. This is your time. Feel better.

I was a fly on the wall for a while, before I joined the group.  I think you will find it's a good bunch of people, who understand what you are dealing with like no one else could.  Glad you found us.

Hi, Boalsman is right. This is the time to take painkillers as necessary; otherwise, your recovery will be impaired. You need to be able to get up and walk around as far as I'm aware. I'm a pharmacist, and the constipation can be sorted out with laxatives called Macrogol. They are gentle; they just pull more water into your gut, which softens your stools. I use them every day and have done for years. I hope it gets sorted out soon because it's not pleasant. All the best to you.

Very helpful

What I did when recovering from surgery was take the opioid at first, then slip in acetaminophen (Tylenol). After the edge was off, the acetaminophen was enough. I used much less of the opioid this way.

But as others have said, get the pain to a tolerable level. You will heal better and faster if you can move around (slowly and carefully, of course).

Yeah, I took oxy after my reversal, and I know what you mean about pain over the old stoma site. I slept in a recliner for the first 10 days when I got home. Take care, rest up, and stay as pain-free as you can.

Good news! Had first bm! Also, have stopped taking all pain meds.

There you go, you saved the day. That means more BMWs are on their way.

Saw surgeon yesterday. Said no need to go back. Can eat anything I want. The journey is over.
