Pain Management After Ileostomy Reversal Surgery

This topic is about managing severe pain after an ileostomy reversal while trying to avoid constipation that can be caused by opioid painkillers. The person who had the surgery is experiencing significant pain at the former stoma site and is looking for ways to manage this pain without causing bowel issues.

Here are some helpful suggestions:

1. Don't suffer through severe pain. It's okay to use the prescribed opioid painkiller for a short time. Take the smallest effective dose and gradually reduce it as the pain decreases.

2. Consider using non-opioid pain relievers like acetaminophen (Tylenol) once the initial intense pain is under control. This can help you use less of the opioid.

3. Instead of avoiding opioids completely, focus on preventing constipation:
- Use an osmotic laxative like Macrogol (known as Movicol or Miralax). These help by drawing water into the bowel, softening stools, and making them easier to pass. They are gentle and can be used daily.
- Stay well-hydrated by drinking water or electrolyte drinks to help with stool softening and overall recovery.

4. Proper pain management can help you start moving around sooner, which aids healing and reduces complications. Try to get up, walk slowly, and change positions as you feel able.

5. Some practical comfort tips include:
- Sleeping in a recliner for the first week or so can help reduce tension on your abdominal wound and make resting more comfortable.
- It's normal for the old stoma site to be the main source of discomfort.

6. Many people have shared that they reached recovery milestones like having their first bowel movement, stopping pain medication completely, and getting the okay from their surgeon to return to a normal diet within the first couple of weeks. This suggests that the intense pain phase is temporary.
