I am going to have a root canal done this afternoon and will be given Novocain to numb the area. I'm wondering how or if it will affect output from my colostomy. I know I am probably worrying needlessly about it. Anybody with a colostomy had experience with this? Thanks.

Very helpful

Hi Hugo đź‘‹

I had novocaine a few months ago for a dental procedure and had no effect on my colostomy. I don't know if “laughing gas” might, though I can't have that as it makes me terribly nauseous.

Good luck! Root canals are so fun, said nobody ever 🤣

If I was a relative newbie with an ostomy, I have no doubt that this site would be very helpful to me.  The members are quick to respond to questions and issues and they are filled with experience.  When I joined, I already had a lifetime with an ostomy, so I just regard it as a place to meet and communicate with other folks similarly situated.  Either way, it is a good site.

Thanks, Karliegirl. You put my mind at ease. I'm certainly not looking forward to it. I have always hated having dental work done.

Good luck with your root canal. I've had a couple, and I do not have fond memories of them.

I could expand a lot on this, but to put a short answer… enjoy your root canal; it won't affect your ostomy.

Hey there,

I had dental work, no problems, and with mine, I also had to be put under. Just make sure you tell the dentist that you have one and where it's at so he can be mindful and careful around your stoma, making sure he doesn't lean too far or put anything on that side. I would fast beforehand.

You will do fine. I have had one root canal. I had some discomfort but not nearly as bad as I expected.

I just had an implant done, first, a tooth extraction, followed by another surgery to place the implant. I had lots of freezing, not fun, but it had no effect on my ostomy. I've had a few root canals. They are not fun, but believe me, you don't want to attempt them without freezing! Good luck.

Thanks for the support, everyone. It wasn't pleasant, but I had no problems, and it didn't affect my colostomy at all. Pretty sore right now, but it was worth it. Evidently, I had a pretty serious infection.

I'm glad it went well. You'll be pretty sore for a couple of days, but then right as rain.

I've had several with no problems, even with extra novocaine and gas.

Hi Hugo,

I had three root canals within the past month. (Do I know how to party or what?)

No problems at all with the ostomy. For what it's worth, the root canals were a piece of cake as well. I suspect you will do just fine! Good luck.
