Is anyone afraid of getting blockages? I eat the few safe foods I can, so I avoid eating new things. I definitely don't eat green beans, peas, corn, skins, or seeds. I just don't want another blockage; they suck! The NG tube I definitely don't want. I gag on it every time I have one. Are there any recipes for ostomates to eat so I'm not eating the same thing every day?

No, but I have had an ileostomy for almost 40 years, so I learned to take everything as it comes long ago. My worst blockage was 7 days in the hospital; they were just thinking about taking me to surgery, but it cleared itself just in time. I'm a wimp, lol. They have to heavily sedate me if they want to put an NG tube down. Last time they tried without sedation, I lost it and pulled the central line out of my neck. Give it time; you will wake up one morning and think it's time to try something new. When you're ready, just try everything in small portions. Then, if it were to cause a blockage, it should be short-lived.

After I got my ostomy I found this site and got a lifetime membership. I have had so much help from the core members, things that even the wound care nurses didn't know. If you haven't been through this journey you don't know - only the people that have experienced this first hand truly understand what your going through. The support is enormously helpful getting through this. Afterwards when you start to learn how to deal with this new normal you can begin to help others.  ...mtnman.

I don't worry about blockages, but then I have had my ileo for five years and know from experience that as long as I chew really well and keep hydrated, I'm fine. I eat anything and everything, but I do spit out very fibrous bits of certain foods that just won't break down well, i.e., pineapple. Don't be afraid to try foods you like; just be cautious and start with small amounts, and chew, chew, chew.

Nope. I eat most anything. I do stay away from animal milk and anything made from corn or with corn syrup. I'm not fond of constantly burping my bag. I tend not to eat many insoluble fiber foods, as I can get the important vitamins elsewhere. But, I can eat them.

I am fortunate in that, even though I don't have a colon, I do have a healthy small bowel. Things pass through just like they did when I was a whole person. Even if I don't chew as well as I did when I had real teeth. 😁

Pop Tarts…great snack in various flavors. Don't be afraid to eat, just learn what works for you.

Frosted or plain? Toasted or right out of the box?

Right outta da box. I'm too lazy to toast 'em.

As for food... at 3 years post-op with my sigmoid colostomy, I eat everything except fried food. No cokes or sugary drinks. I do enjoy a diet coke from time to time. I started out small, now I eat all nuts, popcorn, potatoes with skin, apples with skin, pasta, and pizza.

Occasionally, I pig out on Hot Tamale candy and Haribo gummy bears. I drink carbonated waters like Perrier and San Pellegrino. I have an Ensure Enlive every morning.

But...... Chew, chew, chew... then chew some more. And make sure I'm well hydrated.

Sometimes nothing comes outta my little volcano for a couple of days. I used to get concerned. But then regular output would start up again. Just the way my system rolls.

I eat anything now; I just went cautiously back at the beginning for a short period.

The cherry or strawberry ones. My favorite isn't made anymore… chocolate with vanilla inside.

Hi, all. Plain strawberry, no icing, and a hot cup of coffee.

I have had a blockage and the ng tube is not fun. I have also had ileus three times and had to have an ng tube for that too. Definitely not something I want to do again. I do get afraid of blockages. But I try to be brave and eat what I can. Definitely not corn, popcorn, skins, nuts, seeds. I do eat peanut butter because I have heard that that is safe. But a food processor. Cook veggies very well and then put them through the food processor. Cauliflower and broccoli are two veggies I do that with and haven't had a problem with either. If you cook cauliflower long enough and then put it through the food processor it's like having mash potatoes. LOL But you can cook it a little less and then it has some body to it when you process it. I eat beets from a can, no salt added. I eat soup. Chicken noodle and tomato basil that are progresso reduced sodium. I eat broccoli cheese soup that is panera but i blend it with an emersion blender to chop up the broccoli. There are things you can eat for variety. Crackers. Chewing well helps.. If you miss certain fruits and veggies buy them in the baby food isle. They are so chopped up and blended that they can't cause a blockage. That's how I eat blue berries and strawberries and such. They make fruit and veggie pouches that aren't llittle jars of baby food if you are worried about buying a bunch of jars of baby food. The pouches make a good snack or a good side to a meal. Also make a good dessert. You can also eat oatmeal and chia that way. In the baby food pouches. They also make puddings. But you can eat pudding regular. Jello is another good one. It is also hydrating. Variety is out there if you know how to find it. I do strongly suggest getting a food processor. You can even put salsa in the food processor and be able to eat salsa on tortilla chips.

Chew, chew, chew.
