Feeling Unwell After Ileostomy: Seeking Advice

Had my ileostomy about 4 years. A few days ago, my stomach area began hurting, and I felt sick, flu sick. I was in bed for three days. I feel this was the result of overeating and maybe not enough water. Around my stoma area, I could see what I assume is my small intestine. Normally, this is not visible. For three days, I ate nothing; I didn't want to. I drank a fair amount of water; I didn't want to, but I forced myself.

This happened once before. Same symptoms, but not nearly as severe. My intention is never to eat to excess again.

I appreciate this venue to share.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Do you think it could have been a blockage that you were experiencing? That is kind of like what it sounds like to me. If you are seeing your intestines as visible through your skin, that is not a good thing. You might want to get that checked out.

I just wanted to take the time to wish everyone a good holiday. I especially would like to thank this website and the folks that run it and keep it going. This site has been a life saver for me and I am so thankful I found it. I hope everyone has a great Christmas and Hanukka and if you don't claim either holiday, I hope you have a nice day. See you all next year!

I agree with infinitycastle; it sounds like a blockage. It's possible the blockage cleared on its own.

As you surmise, overeating can cause blockages since portion size is important. Also important is chewing thoroughly and food preparation. For more information on why blockages occur, see

An additional concern in your post is the protrusion of your intestine. You should consult with your gastroenterologist to get a CT scan to see if anything adverse is happening in your GI tract. Ignored problems don't go away; they only get worse.

To put your mind at ease, perhaps seek medical advice.
