Frequent UTIs After Colostomy and Catheter Use

I'm a paraplegic who's had a recent colostomy and also uses a condom catheter.
I use a one-piece colostomy bag and irrigate every evening, being very careful to try not to cross-contaminate.
Sadly, I seem to be getting regular severe UTIs.
Any ideas would be most welcome.

Tough situation to be sure.

My situation is different, but perhaps it will give you some ideas. I have both a colostomy and a urostomy.

I was told to always care for the urostomy first (empty first or change that appliance first). In your case, this means any adjustments or catheter changes should be done before you deal with the colostomy. Do not count on handwashing alone.

You might want to consider disposable gloves if you aren't already using those for the catheter.

Perhaps use a disposable pad on your lap while irrigating? A physical barrier of some sort might catch stray splashes that you're missing.

I'm assuming that you've had the catheter for a significant time and the UTIs are very recent and correspond to the new colostomy. Because, as you probably know, the catheter carries an increased risk of UTIs all by itself.

I’ve only been on this site a little bit, I hardly know how to navigate it, LOL! I just want to say that everyone seems so kind and supportive to each of the members and it’s not only helpful, it makes me happy that there really are so many nice people in this world that can sometimes feel so bleak and cold. I didn’t even know about this site until I found it by accident. I think the hospital staff should bring it to their patients’ attention. Thanks to all, even if you’re just listening!
